Barbaric Horde – Axe of Superior Savagery

Incredibly raw, caustic, and unforgiving extreme metal is far from an uncommon sight in today’s climate where it can easily seem like there’s a constant arms race across the underground that continues to fire off an undeniably aggressive and hugely extreme effort every now and then. Off the top of my head, it’s still Triumvir Foul that brings the highest quality of that exact thing to this day. Until tonight, I haven’t been able to find any other band that could come close to delivering such quality through a single-minded bloodlust.

I’m tempted to say that Barbaric Horde may have even been inspired by the likes of Triumvir Foul with the former’s first demo coming out a few year’s after Triumvir Foul’s, and they sound pretty similar all things considered, but I will refrain from such as Barbaric Horde is undoubtedly its own abomination. There isn’t a single inch of “Axe of Superior Savagery” that considers mercy or even consider the possibility of leaving the listener in any sort of a presentable state. The absolute whole of this record is to torch all that is good in this world and leave it as a pulsating mass of flesh that only wishes to die, but not even such a fleeting thought of mercy crosses Barbaric Horde who are only content in the suffering through their extremely caustic sound and approach that is no less than acidic to the highest degree. Across eight tracks that never once let up except to go from one track to the next, “Axe of Superior Savagery” devastates on every possible level as Barbaric Horde creates a listening experience that’s about as deadly as could be with a surprising quality to match that can only truly be enjoyed by those who revel in real chaos and unrelenting brutality the likes of which only the metal underground can produce. It’s the very definition of caustic and the band more than matches up to the residual competition such that given time I can easily see Barbaric Horde becoming a need-to-know name in the vast underground with their fiery sound consuming many purveyors who are constantly digging for something good to sink their teeth into.

This is one of the more simply deadly albums that I’ve come across in some time with it being as those bands like Esoctrilihum were to make their sound infinitely simpler, and Barbaric Horde plays it off masterfully to potentially poise themselves for greatness. Following this album, I fully expect some of you to join me in keeping a watchful eye on this act, for if they deliver something truly exceptional then I want the word spread immediately!
