It’s not unoften that I find myself listening to an album and eventually turning it off just because it hasn’t grasped me in any sort of way. That’s something every music fan can admit to whether they like it or not, but, sometimes, it takes just one small part to turn the mind around and feel compelled to give the album another chance even if it’s just one note that stands out. When it came to Disamara for me, it took one and a half songs.
From the get-go, I feared that this album was going to suffer the unfortunate fate of sounding like completely uninspired black metal. The beats felt all too familiar and the compositions didn’t grab whatsoever at first with it feeling like Disamara just wasn’t trying. That was the first track so I was pessimistic going into the second track, but I remained hopeful that the album would come back in a big way. And come back it certainly did! Throughout the remainder of “Notturna è la Quiete”, Disamara does a fantastic job at interweaving different melodies of varying potency along with subtle changes in the style that bring real flavor to the album in great detail that ties it all together to where I couldn’t turn away from it. There’s not much in the entirety of “Notturna è la Quiete” that is ground-breaking in any form nor does Disamara stand out as a band that must be heard if you ask me, but there’s clear talent and passion behind this work the likes of which many other bands which they could achieve like with what’s been done here. This record sews the seeds of excellence for Disamara in tremendous quality to where you can hear the true potential all throughout “Notturna è la Quiete”, and it’s the exact sort of thing that gets better and better with each listen.
Despite being incredibly pessimistic upon the first few minutes of listening, I think it’s clear that I managed to come around to what Disamara has created here and I’m quite happy about that. “Notturna è la Quiete” is definitely something for any surveying black metal fan out there looking for something solid to listen to, and I can’t help but feel this is just the tip of the iceberg of what this one-man act is capable of.
