I’ve been on record saying many times within the last while (what’s likely been almost two years at this point, I think) that the realm of death/doom has been extremely bountiful to me in many ways across many bands from all across the world, and I consider myself extremely fortunate that the trend just keeps on going without any stop in sight. At this point, I’m really just excited for anything. But, when Void Rot was the name that came before me today, I won’t lie and say that I was very excited to dive into this anticipated debut, and it does deliver!
Admittedly, this was not exactly the next piece of the style that I thought I’d find myself listening to (as if I plan this shit), but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have the loosest of eyes on Void Rot. Their reputation is still growing after a respectable EP and an intriguing split, and I know that this was definitely something that so many people had been looking forward to even if “Descending Pillars” is “just” the band’s debut full-length. If I didn’t know that, I’d figure that Void Rot had been on the scene for close to if not well over a decade given the talent and skill that’s constantly on display here without many pitfalls, missteps, or even plainly uninteresting bits to be had throughout the seven tracks that adorn the record. Each track plays off of the next as well as the one before whilst Void Rot continuously shows off their prowess in the most delectable way feasible with there being boatloads of massive heaviness, drawn-out riffs that are built upon the glorious concept of a slow build with precise execution to match, and musicianship that is just so on point for the entirety of “Descending Pillars” that you really get the feeling that there’s so much more happening at all times throughout the work that’s constantly paying off in every second with every note. It all culminates to show easily that Void Rot is an act that is more than deserving of the hype that surrounded this release, and “Descending Pillars” capitalizes on that to great extent in every single track with no exceptions.
There weren’t very many death/doom releases that were on my radar this year as submissions to that list are constantly being added on a weekly to monthly basis, and Void Rot is a perfect example of that. An act that I’ve been aware of but hadn’t listened to before today, there isn’t a single thing done here that shouldn’t get anyone who’s even a mild fan of the style excited for what’s contained here. “Descending Pillars” has so much to offer, and I wouldn’t be shocked if this became a pillar of its own when we look back at the year’s contributions for the glorious realm that is death/doom.
