The vast landscape of technical death metal is an absolutely staggering thing to witness if you’re not prepared for what the style has to offer in its ever-expanding catalog of premium acts, and even if you do know what you’re getting into, there’s so much excellence constantly being thrown around that it’s impossible to become bored with it. Inferi quickly one of the top acts to know for the whole style when their 2014 album, “The Path of Apotheosis”, started them on the course of a beyond meteoric rise like we rarely get to see, and that trend is only continuing. With the release of this 5-track EP, Inferi has been gracious enough to give us a little morsel to carry us over until their next full-length display of mastery.

There is rarely a time when a Lovecraftian theme goes poorly used, and this certainly is no exception. While I cannot speak for the lyrical content of this work, it’s literally everything else that’s to be found within the sprawling confines of “Of Sunless Realms” that we find Inferi just as deadly as they’ve always been with this EP being a stepping stone that is just a quick stop along the way, but that doesn’t make it any less magnificent or worth checking out. Inferi is as fiery as ever with this work, and while that small element of surprise at just how powerful they are in their craft may be lost over time as we start to see it accomplished flawlessly time after time, that still doesn’t take away from just how staggering the quality at play here is consistently for the absolute entire creation that is “Of Sunless Realms”. An unrelenting experience the likes of which only seasoned craftsmen from the world of tech-death could provide, the dazzling displays of musicianship are still as much a highlight as ever with Inferi showing us at every possible turn just how well they dominate over the competition in just about every form possible, and each passing minute gives us another reason as to just why exactly Inferi has managed to become as revered as they have in such a relatively short amount of time. In virtually every way, “Of Sunless Realms” quickly rises to become a tour de force of technical death metal however brief to show us why Inferi has become what they have, why people follow them so fanatically, and why exactly you need to keep your eye on this band from this point on.

Works like these are becoming more common by the year, but it’s not by a lot and nowhere near the point where fans are starting to get burnt out for works like “Of Sunless Realms”, and if the initial knee-jerk reaction at the very announcement of this release from the community is anything to glean from, it’s that both Inferi and the style are in more than capable and loyal hands. It’s something that really puts a smile on my face, and I can’t wait to be increasingly impatient about another hit of ecstasy from Inferi with the rest of the community for what’s likely to be the next few years.
