When I sit down with the intent to find some quality black metal, I tend to either be looking for something that sticks to the classic styles or something that shatters all sorts of stylistic barriers. Finding something that’s a little in the middle is always fun since you get at least a little from both worlds in some form or another, and that’s not what I was expecting to get tonight when I sat down to listen to Prometheus’s sophomore full-length that brought a good bit more to the table than what I was prepared for.
The central core that this album is constantly swirling around is undeniably black metal that’s steeply rooted in the classic styles that we all know whether we enjoy them anymore or not from one album to the next, but just to leave the description there would be an injustice. In select and incredibly opportune moments throughout “Resonant Echoes From Cosmos Of Old”, we’re given brief glimpses into an entirely different world that Prometheus perpetually has access to, but they only let us get a peek at it either at the end of these six tracks or for short intervals at seemingly random points throughout the creation. It makes the album feel so much more alive in virtually every form with every song having the same ideals and core to work off of, but they all have individual personalities that make the overall of “Resonant Echoes From Cosmos Of Old” feel so much more dynamic and engaging that it’s a wonder to behold for any fan of black metal. That’s doubly so given the space theme that has strong notes of Lovecraft here that elevates things even further, and if that doesn’t make this work a record worth checking out then I don’t know what it’ll take for some people.
Prometheus has crafted something that instantly shows its quality where it would take some time for other bands to get into the right groove in order to impress, but here it’s done in seconds. So much of what’s poured into “Resonant Echoes From Cosmos Of Old” is the black metal that tastes just right to make for a delectable meal at every possible turn, and this act knows how to serve it exquisitely.
