A debut that really goes for it is something that we are all hoping to find simply because if the debut shows that the band in question is really putting all their chips down in order to make a good impression at the first possible step. That’s especially true for black metal, if you ask me, since it’s difficult to stand out in a style that’s both immensely saturated at times and cutthroat to compete in. But, it’s with just two tracks that Kosmovorous makes their debut with more than an absolute bang, and it’s fucking awesome!
Let’s just be clear about one thing: there were only two things that Kosmovorous brought forth for this EP that really gets me going every single time I even just think about it. (1) The length of both songs that are featured in “Glorification Sermons” as each tastefully stretches over ten minutes, and (2) the sheer power that Kosmovorous wields throughout the whole EP. Now, power is anything but scarce when it comes to just about everything related to black metal, but it’s only because of how effectively this trio uses it in even the most mundane of ways that this pair of tracks excel leagues beyond what many other albums fail at accomplishing. Pile on top of that undeniable riffage and musicianship from guys who have a clear master-level of understanding of what exactly they’re doing at every step of the way with the end result that is “Glorification Sermons” being a true juggernaut who’s fury cannot be contained, the blasphemy is downright fiery, and the excellence is at a tantalizing high at all times. It’s the very definition of a surprise from the likes of black metal even though Kosmovorous didn’t do anything new in the grand scheme of it all, but that’s not what’s needed in order to create something of value. It’s promising beyond my comprehension and the only material that I needed in order to convince me to keep a very sharp eye on the name that is Kosmovorous for anything that they may dish out in the future.
Humble is a word I like to use for many promising EPs, but “Glorification Sermons” is anything but humble. Right from the get-go, you can feel that Kosmovorous was bringing something special forth from the hellscape where this material was crafted, and it’s the exact sort of material that people like us are constantly clamoring for at any point in time. And to say that Kosmovorous has started off on the exact right foot would be to extremely underplay just what dark magnificence is eternally at play here.
