The many bands of heavy psychedelic rock are always the sort of thing that can keep even the most avid fans on their toes no matter how many bands manage to dish out greatness of all sorts. Warlung’s influence has only recently become something that people are taking more notice of which is very well deserved, but it was a new and fresh effort that I was anticipating the most from this act. Any new material is always something to get excited about, and it’s here that Warlung has taken that to great effect.

I just need you to visualize everything great that the world of psychedelic music has to offer from its most mesmerizing psychedelia to its heaviest elements, and take the best of all of its best parts of each to combine them into an absolutely massive effort that does not hold back in any form. Whether it be in the form of immense riffages, undeniable heaviness, or gorgeous dreamscapes, “Optical Delusions” has as much to offer as any great band of the style. The best way to fall into this record, like many others, is to just let it happen, let Warlung take you wherever they may, and just bear witness to whatever may happen. Do that and I can virtually guarantee that you’ll be taken on a trip the likes of which is no less than massive in every single way as Warlung charges forth with nothing short of extreme talent and capability to bring us a tremendous display of heavy psych the likes of which is nigh on delicious from beginning to end, and it’s every track throughout “Optical Delusions” that we see it done to glorious effect. It’s got just enough for every fan of this style to fall right into without having to even think about it with just the first track being enough to draw people in with the remainder of this effort being as seductive as anybody could ever ask for. Warlung’s discography has been far from anything to scoff at for multiple albums now, but it’s here with “Optical Delusions” that they’ve cemented themselves as one of the heavy psych’s best kept secrets.

After all the superior releases that psychedelic music has seen in recent months, it’s not hard to think that it’s a true task to try and make yourself standout after such stiff competition already playing their hands. For Warlung, though, this release was as decisive as it was effortless since their quality has never been in question as it comes to a fantastic peak for this record to only ensure the legacy that this band will leave on the modern landscape of the style. “Optical Delusions” to a mandatory listen for any fan of the genre, and I truly feel sorry for anyone who skips over its grandeur.
