The Garin – s/t

It’s possibly on the very fringes of the ever-changing style that is experimental rock that I find myself becoming the most intrigued by what modern rock has to offer simply due to the given fact that it’s rare to find two bands sounding alike by any standards. But, trying to find a new sound that works is rarely an easy task if ever so any band that manages to do such is always worthy of commendation if you ask me. When it comes to their latest offering, The Garlin more than beats the standards by all accounts in every way.

What really gets me going whenever we’re talking about any sort of experimental craft is whenever the band in question is able to do multiple things with their ever-changing sound across multiple tracks that really show us what they’re capable of with a sound that’s as frenetic and unpredictable as anyone could ask for. The Garlin definitely fits that bill as it’s in every offering that they present to us throughout this eponymous EP that gives us something almost completely new that we won’t see at any other point in the album. This band constantly keeps you guessing as to just what exactly is coming next with there never being any sort of indication when they’ll decide to do a sudden sharp-left turn into some groove-driven sweetness or a solo that feels reminiscent of psychedelic legends of the past, and there isn’t a single one of them that The Garlin does pull off with a stunning amount of quality. It’s the sort of thing that makes you wonder where this band has been to provide such excellence to your ears for so long, and it’s when you realize that there are just four tracks to this album that you realize it’s not nearly enough to satisfy that desire. Even after several spins, the sound that The Garlin produces here is no less interesting or slightly addicting than what it was on the first spin and I highly doubt it’s going to tire on my ears any time soon.

The very nature of dwelling within the realm of any sort of music that can be called experimental is to make music that may not always sound good rather than be made almost simply to exist, but it’s with the likes of The Garlin that we see the style done true justice with a work that’s as dynamic as it is organic and magnificent to boot. This is fortunately just the very beginning of the discography that The Garlin is very slowly building up, and I can’t help but feel that it’s going to grow into something very interesting in all respects.
