The number of quality death/doom acts to have come out in recent years and risen to the task of delivering greatness that we can really sink our teeth into has risen tremendously, and you could almost point in any direction and find a band that is more than worthy of attention. Hinayana is just one name that I’d come across amongst the throngs of others, but their potential was always obvious. It’s felt much longer than two years since their only full-length album, and it feels so good to hear new material from them again!
Just to create any solid body of work that falls within the realms of death/doom that I can listen to for hours and hours never once getting tired of it is to create something that has undeniable quality breathing such that every single aspect of the album exudes glory that we can never get over enough of. Hinayana has had their sound down tight for years now ever since before their full-length record, but it’s undoubtedly with “Death of the Cosmic” that Hinayana has taken their sound to a completely different level across all five of these tracks to make me believe that this band is capable of so much more than just heaviness or a little bit of melody to throw around. Rather, this EP presents to us with grandeur that bands like this have always alluded to but it’s in every single track throughout the entirety of “Death of the Cosmic” that we see Hinayana quickly grow into their own. Plenty of what’s gone into this work is indicative of any great piece of death/doom by many standards, and it’s even after listening to it for hours that I cannot once grow tired of what this band has crafted in splendorous display here, for, surely, it’s just the beginning of what they’re truly capable of.
I’ve always found it fascinating to look at a band’s discography and really see the turning point where they started to become something far more interesting, and while Hinayana has always been fascinating, it’s undoubtedly here that they’ve reached what’s so far their undeniable peak. “Death of the Cosmic” is by all means a standout release for this act, and I know for an utmost fact in my very soul that this is just a glimpse of the true glory of what they’ll provide us in the hopefully not too distant future.
