More often than not, when you’re doing a split series, you are anxious to release them all within quick succession of each other because why not, right? It’s been two years since the first entry to the diptych splits that Precaria has prepared to do and whether the wait was because of the material not quite being finished or waiting for another willing partner in chaos I know not nor care simply because the resulting second and last of the splits is something that is massive and undeniable in so many different forms.
With the second half of the painting whose counterpart was presented for the first split between two other noteworthy bands, it’s the other that we get a very good look at here as Precaria sets out to finish what they started back in 2018 but with only one other band this time around, but arguably even more mysterious. Up to this point, Ôros Kaù has only released one body of material with more on the way, but don’t let that lack of substance mean lack of talent or potency as it’s throughout the entirety of “Theosulphuros” that we’re given an experience the likes of which only the true glory of the underground can bring in such manner. Forty minutes between both bands and not any one of them wasted, there’s so much going on within the black and death metal regions that this album covers such that it’d be a task to ask for this work to be more chaotic than it already is with tons of quality being thrown around at any given moment. It’s the likes of which that many bands are constantly striving to achieve with only a few truly succeeding on a scale like this, and between Precaria and Ôros Kaù it’s undeniable to claim “Theosulphuros” as anything but. So much of what you could ever ask for from the ever-hostile style comes to life in truly hellish fashion for every single one of these songs, and it’s the further into this split that you find yourself more and more captivated by what is taking place and infesting your very skull.
There has been an unprecedented number of immensely noteworthy splits to happen this year, and anybody would be remiss to not consider “Theosulphuros” as one of them without question. Both Precaria and Ôros Kaù have put on performances that should be considered no less than exemplary in a form like this, and I cannot wait to return to this inferno many times over in the coming months.
