It really does seem like every year brings us tons of new funeral doom to sink our teeth into with the previous years seeming like something close to a water-desperate woodland where there’s clearly something, but not much. The last few years, in particular, have been beyond bountiful. The name of My Death Belongs To You is a fresh one to the style, but that doesn’t mean these guys are lacking in substance or talent in their debut that’s as promising as it is fitting for the style.
While the songs are not as long as what some listeners may be looking for when they hear of funeral doom (as if well over nine minutes across the board isn’t long), there’s no question throughout the entirety of the record that this Swiss act doesn’t know exactly what they’re doing at every step of the way. “The World Seems To Be Fading” is certainly a far cry for anything that can be considered a masterpiece, but there’s no way you can sit there and tell me that this is not in every way a worthwhile listen for any fan who finds themselves interested in whatever the scene pumps out. Combining ravenous heaviness, a strong sense of melancholy that’s to be found across every offering of the style, and an incredibly effective but sparingly used piano, My Death Belongs To You does an exceedingly interesting job with their debut for a work the likes of which I won’t soon be forgetting. It’s a base that is primed for exponential growth the likes of which we can get glimpses of throughout “The World Seems To Be Fading”, and it’ll be by the end that I hope to find any funeral doom fan that’s worth their own salt to enjoy what’s to be had what’s found within the five pieces of blissful death.
Each band has many things that they can do in order to improve upon themselves as they go from one album to the next, and while that’s no different here, My Death Belongs To You has found a sound that they can clearly work with. They show at every turn of “The World Seems To Be Fading” that they’re more than capable of delivering a great performance that can and should be lapped up by many in the community.
