0 – Entity

It’s not terribly uncommon to find a band that brings together the scathing worlds of black and doom metal in order to create a truly dark experience the likes of which there can be no happiness, but it’s not nearly as often that we can find an act that can pull it off so well that it leaves an actual impact upon the soul. About six years ago, 0 came onto the scene with a monolithic album that had so much malice and potential that the excitement is palpable when considering a new effort from this act. Seeing the grandeur that is “Entity”, it’s a wish come true of sorts.

Whereas 0 had shown us before that they were more than capable of pulling off a long-ass track, but it’s always interesting to see when bands are more than capable of both like what’s on full display throughout “Entity”. Granted, the longest track on display here stops just short of ten minutes, but that doesn’t take away from the immense presence and force that 0 commands at every single turn to make this easily one of the most harrowing combinations of black and doom metal that have reached my ears for a good while. Emotion tends to lend itself immensely to a style like this with it constantly being the driving point for whatever the sound that the band in question is going for becoming greatly amplified the moment that you realize the emotional value to what’s happening, and that’s no different the case for 0 here. In every step of the way, “Entity” is wreathed in this soul-shaking tone that penetrates every note of what they bring forth with emotion just being one of the first notes of the supreme concoction that you’re sipping with undeniable power and prowess following swiftly after. It quickly snowballs into this utterly massive performance that is more than just satisfying but also immersive on a great scale such that it becomes a true task to not become fully invested in what 0 has crafted here with all six tracks being monolithic in their own right. There are many, many albums in the crossover world of black and doom metal that do their best to emulate even a vestige of what’s brought to the table for the album, and it’s all of that folly from elsewhere that makes the excellence of what’s done here all the more fantastic as 0 return to us after six years to give us “Entity” in all of its darkened glory the likes of which we will, surely, wait very impatiently for.

The bleakness and the utter power of this album is something that absolutely needs to be heard for any sort of fan of black and doom metal with “Entity” containing everything that can be asked for from a work of high quality. It’s with the likes of 0 that I’m left hoping we get more material from this band sooner rather than later, but if later means it’s a more refined product of darkness that can somehow even top “Entity”, then I’ll gladly wait for years for such a creation.
