When it came to bands that came out with a breakout debut album in 2017, you cannot take another breath without mentioning Dvne. The Scottish act truly took over Bandcamp with “Asheran” by all accounts with everything they did being considered a true masterstroke the likes of which cementing Dvne as one of the acts to know of the past decade to surface with great success. Three years later, whilst their second album is in the process of forming, they’ve presented us with a gift of an EP, and it truly is a step in the right direction.
It’s hard to listen to “Asheran” and think that it has room for improvement given how exquisite the album is in its entirety, but, like every piece of work of all sorts, there is always room to improve in one form or another. Now, I cannot and will not sit here and tell you what could’ve been improved upon what Dvne did three years ago, but whatever it was that they have accomplished between then and the release of “Omega Severer” it shows an increased level of talent that is no less than scrumptuous. There are just two tracks to be had in this EP, but it is far from humble. Boasting both a brand new song and a re-recording of one of the first songs that I ever heard from Dvne, “Of Blade and Carapace”, this is every bit a small step forward when it comes to Dvne’s overall journey into the sands of Arrakis but it gives us another quick, 17-minute peek behind the curtains of what Dvne is capable of, and that shows us that this band is far from a one trick pony. Two songs are rarely anything to go off of, but a nagging sensation is placed within the heart of any Dvne fan new or old that listens to “Omega Severer” as it makes you realize that new material from Dvne is everything that we’ve been needing injected into our veins right now with this being one of the best hits that we’ve had in years. It gets the mouth watering for new Dvne material, and right now I can say for a fact that many of us are frothing like fucking waterfalls.
It is likely still going to be at least a year before we hear more from this act (a shot in the dark at best), but I cannot sit here and tell you that “Omega Severer” does not fire on all the right cylinders in order to strike the mind in a way that’s well past tantalizing. Dvne is slowly continuing down their path of becoming one of the best acts of the entire world of progressive doom, and many of us, myself included, have no doubt that Dvne is more than up to the task.
