The metal community at large is something that will never be lacking when it comes to acts that are blasphemous for one reason or another whether or not that is a reflection of the band members or simply seeking a creative outlet with that being the best vehicle for the job. Blasphemy is not exactly my flavor in my day to day life, but it’d be impossible for me to sit here and say that it doesn’t make for damn good metal. I could name any number of bands that do it justice from all over, and it’s Phalanx Inferno that is just one of many great examples we could pick out of the ocean of others.
This is the kind of material that we listen to when we want to feel the confines of society falling apart simply due to how disgusting this album is despite how precise it is in its overall execution of this particularly scathing vein of metal that never once feels hollow. “The Age of Anti-Aquarius” often feels like a by the number album when it comes to all the other competition within the overall death/black metal scene, but there is hardly an argument to be made about how well of a job Phalanx Inferno has done here. Including a very tasteful Celtic Frost cover that’s done quite well all things considered, “The Age of Anti-Aquarius” is done with immense precision, commanding riffs, an attitude that is no less than fiery, and a drive to truly see all things good in this world torn down in vicious fashion. It’s a concept that is far from new, but there’s no way to deny that the potency for such a theme has far from dwindled despite how many acts bring us works that can be attributed as just that and it’s here that Phalanx Inferno has delivered another gloriously black example of that to continue us along the way. The identity of this act has yet to be solidified with this sound being able to be discerned and heard from hundreds of other acts across the scene, but that doesn’t take away from the sheer fact that what’s been done here is done immensely well with a respectable amount of excellence to be had around every voracious corner that “The Age of Anti-Aquarius” carves out with intense fervor.
Works like this can often feel like dime a dozen with out saturated the scene is, but there’s plenty happening within this EP that makes it worth investigating for “The Age of Anti-Aquarius” has the right attitude and approach to make for something very well done. Phalanx Inferno has a way to go before becoming something that’s truly worth talking about in every form, but I do believe that those seeds are sewn expertly throughout every moment of “The Age of Anti-Aquarius”.
