The progression of any band as they rise through the hierarchy of any scene is always something fun to watch, and that tends to go doubly so when it comes to extreme metal. When I first came across Korpsesoturi on the then-burgeoning label of Rotted Life, I feel like we all knew from the debut that this Finnish act was something else; an act to help define the modern age of Finnish death metal in the underground. In just the short span of two years, they’ve risen to such a challenge with a resulting album that is equally staggering and impressive.

It would be absolutely insane of me to say that Finland is anything less than an absolute bastion of death metal, and it would be equally insane of me to claim Korpsesoturi as anything other than a fierce berserker on the very fringe of the newest wave of bands taking over the scene. It’s in their short span of life so far as a band that they have done no less than dominate wherever they go, and while it was the debut that caught the attention of many with myself included, it is undoubtedly “Korpskrist” that shows us what they are truly capable of. Paired with a vicious bloodlust and a never-ending ferocity that is no less than utterly dominating, there isn’t much within this ten-track miasma of death that doesn’t let up to let a single blood-drenched victim such that they can find themselves in a moment of reprieve, and why would you when you find yourself lost in this corpse-ridden riff storm that wouldn’t let up for the end of the world? If anything, this is the soundtrack to those very end of days as “Korpskrist” does everything in its power to dominate all who find themselves experiencing it, and Korpsesoturi composed it in such a way that it’s no less than utterly dominating. The band has already mastered the art of drawing the listener in with more and more excellence the likes of which many of us will find hard to wretch ourselves away from, and why should we when this creation is a textbook example of everything we’ve come to expect and lust for when it comes to the ever-glorious realm of Finnish death metal.

To consider what Korpsesoturi has achieved up to this point in such a short amount of time is to consider what it means for a band’s quality to be no less than meteoric. Every facet of what’s been done here is a grand escalation of what this band did just two years ago, and if “Korpskrist” is just the first thing that they’ve been able to create in such a short time then I tremble as what they’ll summon later on.
