The glory of the internet is truly at some of its best when it comes to how bountiful Bandcamp is in its entirety for music lovers of all kinds. Where record stores were the places to be for discovering new talents of all kinds, Bandcamp proves to be almost infinitely more wealthy in every form. The vast realms of rock are possibly the best examples of this with each dive that I take into its depths providing quality that is no less than salivating in so many ways, and Ṙo is just one of the thousands of perfect examples of just that.
Post-rock is a style that we can finds endless cases of at virtually any given time for how malleable its sound can be in any case with many taking the instrumental route through it all, and there are plenty of damn good reasons for that. The atmospheres and rhythms that can be brought forth really know how to strike all the right chords of the ear and soul, and it’s within the confines of “Athalase” that Ṙo executes a performance that is nigh on flavorful in all the right areas. It’s just five tracks that we’re treated to here, but it is every single one of them that we see Ṙo pull off a pillar of post-rock in exemplary fashion if they don’t execute all of them brilliantly. From the soothing rhythms that flow like water, chilling atmospheres that boast the essence of mist-veiled mountain woods like what we see with the cover art, quality that is immediately delicious to take in, and an overall musicianship that’s not to be ignored for any of the 35+ minutes that “Athalase” claims as its own, what is there that is done here that’s not to be adored in every capacity? The style has seen many, many different iterations since the invention of Bandcamp with that trend likely never going away and it really does feel like Ṙo is a product of that exact process with this very sound being both indicative of what the style has become in its best attributes as well as an amalgamation of bands that have come before with so many different flavors coming together seamlessly to make “Athalase” something that every fan of the sound absolutely must-hear.
Works like these are always something that I need more of in my life since it’s just such a massive change from my normal listening habits in the best ways; chill, intoxicating, and downright well-done in every way. In its entirety, “Athalase” should be considered a massive achievement by Ṙo for everything that they could’ve done right well pulled off incredibly well here to make this work not only captivating from top to bottom but virtually essential for any purveyor of the style.
