Morpholith – Null Dimensions

When it comes to psychedelia in some of its heaviest forms, doom metal is one of the best vessels to deliver that excellence and it’s no task whatsoever to see why that’s the case. It hasn’t been since Zaum’s last effort that I’ve been able to fall back into any piece of material that could qualify as such, and my search was starting to turn desperate if I’m to be honest. Not many were able to catch my attention and then hold it, but it was when I stumbled upon the latest from Morpholith that I knew that had changed.

With just two tracks and a runtime of over 30 minutes, I already had the distinct feeling that Morpholith was on track from something very interesting before I had even heard a note of “Null Dimensions”. It’s very often that heavy works of psychedelia paint a cosmic picture that’s both crushing and extremely beautiful right from the start, and Morpholith is another magnificent example of that with each of these tracks giving us an uncompromising presence throughout their entirety to give us a listen that can only be qualified as staggering. Just falling into what’s been done throughout “Null Dimensions” is to be compacted into a performance that absolutely fits that cosmic backdrop with the instruments being downright masterful as they transfer seamlessly from crushing heaviness to drifting through a nebula of ever-shifting space dust that allows “Null Dimensions” to become a work that knows exactly how to encompass the whole of the listener without exception, and that’s just the very beginning of what Morpholith has to offer for this captivating EP. It’s the exact kind of material that I’ve been looking for with the only lament I have is that this work comes to an end, but, even then, there’s so much within the confines of “Null Dimensions” to pick apart that I’m convinced you’d have to be lying to yourself if you were to say that you didn’t want to dive into and examine every single piece of what this two-track EP brings to the table.

This is one of those works that demands to be treated to multiple listens since one spin is not nearly enough to absorb everything that put forth in all of “Null Dimensions”. At every turn, Morpholith does a fantastic job at keeping the attention of the listener via a gorgeous display of musicianship and gorgeous imagery to the point that it’s hard to rip yourself away from such a display once you let yourself fall into it, and I can’t wait to see how this act may be able to follow it up.
