If I were to sit down and want to find music that I could meditate to without having to even think about it, doom would easily be one of my quickest choices for what all the style can lend to such a concept with bands like Om (just to name one) executing it with magnificent result. It’s something that’s not done often enough, though, if you ask me. Meditative doom is truly like very few other styles in all of music for what it can offer whilst having a huge range that gives any willing band plenty to explore and work with. I ama always excited to see what bands will come out of nowhere to deliver such possible glory, and it’s on their debut that Breath has made a substantial work that fits the style almost too well.
The ultimate tool for something of this like undoubtedly has to be finding excellence via longevity. Meditative works are rarely quick with doom being a particular example of long-winded material even without that caviat, but in order to transport your listen to the sort of world like what Breath advertises for “Primeval Transmissions”, it is paramount that you have that technique on lockdown with good execution as the key to let it loose. With seemingly minimal effort, Breath was able to do that and so much more with this debut. A very much stripped-down of what I might expect to see from the likes of Zaum, Breath’s debut is a captivating experience that feels like I’m right there in the crowd at a live show with how analog the recording feels as if it was done to give us the purest form of what “Primeval Transmissions” was envisioned to be with this record being but the vessel to guide us to their hidden woods that are filled with the mysteries and answers that we are constantly seeking for, even if we don’t know it. But it becomes clear slowly over time: Breath is not just a one-trick pony that can provide us with some chill tunes, but a proper doom act as well that can bring a tremendous presence through undeniable melodies and satisfying riffs that are all implemented so perfectly into that meditative structure such that “Primeval Transmissions” really has you swaying to its ebbing and flowing in a manner that is nigh on irresistible should you even just dip a toe into what’s offered here. Breath truly knew what they were going for when crafting this debut, and I would be committing a criminal act if I were not to praise it for all that it brings forth for it really is one of the biggest things that makes this record so enjoyable even if you’d be hard-pressed to find distinct flaws within.
Such works like what’s on full display here are constantly what I want more of out of doom and the meditative corner of that style with there rarely being a band that can deliver it in a way that leaves me very impressed. If you can’t tell, Breath more than does it for me! The very presence of “Primeval Transmissions” is enough to lure you into a gripping trance that you can’t help but fall ever deeper into with the destination not mattering one bit for this journey is one that is too excellent for the ending to be in the mind.
