It’s not terribly often by any standards that we can come across an album, instrumental or not, and feel like it can actually be the soundtrack to a film. Whether it’s the entire body of music for a short film, a source of background noise in a single scene, or the construct from which the medium revolves around, any worthy work is more than enough to prompt investigation over and over again. In that regard, I’ve always heard great shit about Cortége with the drummer being from another band that I’m extremely familiar with, but I’ve never actually sat down to check them out. It was beyond time that I remedy such a crime with this brand new EP from a fantastic up-and-coming label, and now I know for a fact that I have a backlog to go through after typing this!
Right away, I know my one and only complaint about “Chasing Daylight”. For all of its excellence and its glory, it is a shame upon all that is good music that this is just a two-track EP. It leaves you wanting so much more! Cortége knows exactly how to play their deliciously eclectic sound that can very well be described as post-doom with an instrumental kick, but there’s so much more happening in this humble but proud work that shows us just a taste of what this promising duo is capable of. This whole of this EP that’s split perfectly almost down the middle to provide us with a kaleidoscope-like sky over red sands and towers of rock that is no less than absolutely mesmerizing in every form as the tantalizing droning of Cortége’s sound takes captivation to the nth degree such that listening to “Chasing Daylight” for hours on end like I have is, surely, just a taste of the post-Western world that Cortége are crafting. The very concept of this EP which can be discerned from the very title is one that is epic on a scale that we’d normally expect large, bombastic compositions rather than a methodical slow-burn that can easily shift into a burst of color and personality before instantly shifting back to provide us with an extremely diverse work that captures our imaginations without uttering a single word as we take the backseat to Cortége’s latest creation as we join them on their journey to chasing the very light of day in an epic ride through the desert and sky the likes of which we’ve likely never heard elsewhere.
“Chasing Daylight” is not only a fancy name for an EP to catch our attention but a way that also conveys how ambitious this sound is in its very essence. There may be plenty of other acts out there that can claim they come close to what Cortége pulls off here, but you would be hard-pressed to find another name that brings all of these flavors together in the format that Cortége command here which makes them a unique name whose unique pallette of sonic paint cannot be denied. Long has Cortége been on my radar, and it’s finally now with the epiphany that is “Chasing Daylight” that I realize why exactly the name kept finding its way back for me even if I wasn’t looking for it.
“Chasing Daylight” releases on February 26th via Desert Records!
