If you were to look into the many rising acts that grace the world of doom, you would come across that certainly stand out and I truly do believe you can’t talk about young up-and-coming acts in doom without mentioning the likes of Acid Mammoth. Despite just having two albums to their name, Acid Mammoth has already garnered a great name for themselves with an incredibly thick sound that’s built off of undeniable riffs and a great, classic sound that mixes far too well with their brand of psychedelia to be easily ignored. Last year’s “Under Acid Hoof” was quite a spectacle, but it’s with “Caravan” that I find myself significantly more impressed.
Now, let’s address the prehistoric pachyderm in the room: that description I just gave of Acid Mammoth is so generic that it sounds like it should be on the shelf at Dollar Tree. Simply put, though, it’s just too accurate as this is another instance of a band doing virtually nothing new with their sound with the raw talent and passion coming together to make the material shine, and Acid Mammoth makes it work deliciously such that “Caravan” can easily be considered one of the most satisfying and fun works to come out of the world of doom in the first quarter. It picks off right where the previously mentioned album, “Under Acid Hoof”, left off last year with these five tracks coming at us barely a full year later with longer songs and an increased refinement that is both welcome and surprising given it normally takes bands a few more years to achieve such an accomplishment, but it’s yet again that Acid Mammoth prove to be the band that many of us having been dying for. The absolute entirety of “Caravan” is something that moves just as purposefully as one as well with each step of the album feeling so deliberate without a single note feeling wasted, unneccessary, or even boring as Acid Mammoth really take their time to craft a slow burn that knows precisely how to take the long, thoughtful approach to everything that culminates in an effort that’s beyond satisfying for anyone wanting the hear the thick riff return in full force or Acid Mammoth make things somehow even heavier with each payoff being just as fantastically tasteful as the last.
In no short amount, “Caravan” boasts the riffs, attitude, personality, talent, and power that so many up-and-coming acts in this style are always striving to achieve with very few being able to pull it off properly with even fewer doing it within a year. More than anything else, that should be proof that Acid Mammoth is not just another band executing the tropes of doom in a way that is mildly potent, but, rather, a tour de force of the young blood coming into the style both pay homage to the sound that brought us here in the first place and carving out their own path in a scene that’s just as welcoming as it is ravenous.
