If you’re going to even think about talking about the modern state of Finnish death metal, especially when it comes to rising names, you cannot go far without at the very least taking into consideration Sadistik Forest. They’ve been a force to be reckoned with for years now, but it was with their last full-length, “Morbid Majesties”, that many of us had our eyes opened to their splendid brutality, mine included. Hearkening back to the old sound without leaning too much on the old ways to forge their own path, Sadistik Forest is easily a name to know, and it’s with their forthcoming EP that the fact has become cemented in stone!
The problem with bands like Sadistik Forest is that there is rarely enough material to go around on any given release simply because their sound is so infectious that it’s damn hard to accept that it even comes to an end. That was one of my biggest lamentations with the band’s last full-length, and it is exponentially worse with “Obscure Old Remains”. There are just four tracks in this entire EP and I cannot express hard enough how much everyone will be left wanting more once it all comes to an end for this is everything that Sadistik Forest brought to the table with the last album, but it’s even then that they’ve managed to tweak their sound such that it definitely feels like their own creation. The implementation of slightly thrashier elements to absolute heaps for this creation with it showing an almost entirely new side of Sadistik Forest that we’ve never seen before, and to combine that with the band’s unforgettable riffage, bloodthirsty attitude, and undeniable musicianship, how can you do anything other than fall in love with “Obscure Old Remains”? This is the epitome of less is more as there isn’t a single moment wasted throughout the whole of this blistering EP that will absolutely leave its impact on you such that you’ll be immediately scrambling to hear more for it truly does wash over you that much, and it is hard to let go of something this magnificent once you get a good hold on it but is it the listener that has a hold on the music or Sadistik Forest that has its meaty hooks dug deep into the psyche of the listener? No matter what the answer may be, I dare any single person to defy the sheer power that’s on display in all four of these tracks and I’d be more than willing to fistfight anyone who dares think that “Obscure Old Remains” is anything less than staggering in every category, for it’s with this EP alone that Sadistik Forest has shown us what they’re really capable of even if it’s a small glimpse of their true power.
Finnish death metal has long been a sound to know should you consider yourself any proper fan of death metal, and it’s thanks to bands like Sadistik Forest that it’s been going immensely strong ever since its inception, but it is this band, in particular, that is at the forefront of what the country is capable of. If, somehow, “Morbid Majesties” didn’t convince many of you of that fact then it is undoubtedly “Obscure Old Remains” that should win you over for more than ever before, this is an effort that Sadistik Forest can absolutely call all their own without a shred of unnecessary pride for this is a creation to be extremely proud of, and it will be a true crime upon music itself should this EP go unheralded for the mini-masterpiece of intensity that it is.
