We could sit here for hours and talk about bands that released some sort of material many years ago, threw in the towel, only to come back in recent times with renewed spirits and a fresh drive to create some standout material with the biggest of such being Cirith Ungol. Tonight, though, no such name anywhere nearly as big as Cirith Ungol, but I’d be lying I said that I wasn’t quite impressed with what this band brought forth for their first offering since their revival last year after a ten-year hiatus, and it’s with that return that we see Evocator graduate from demos to an EP that definitely caught me off-guard.
What gets me going about what Evocator do for the absolute whole of this EP is the simple fact that they instantly making it known that they are not here to play it safe nor are they pulling any one of their punches with all three tracks that “Chronicles of Pestilence” calls its own being absolute smashers from beginning to end. There is true power in every second of this release to the point that you can really feel the expertise that was cultivated across the four demos that Evocator whipped up between 2007 and 2010 that all come full circle to provide an edge the likes of which makes this debut EP a bold step forward for this band that really is writhing with greatness and even more potential as you can feel Evocator’s young but well-executed sound come together with precision and tenacity that makes the performance as a whole downright delectable by all accounts. Whether it’s the riffs that put you in, the sheer raw power that is commanded throughout virtually every minute of this creation, the brilliant gelling of the big three styles that make up extreme metal with doom and death metal having particular emphasis for the whole of the work, or the simple idea of a new name coming around with banging material that fires on all the right cylinders, Evocator has certainly made a work that can absolute jive for many of us.
“Chronicles of Pestilence” may seem like another amateur album given that at the moment it has but three supporters on Bandcamp and the band doesn’t have any social media from what I could find, but I implore any of you to go into this EP knowing that should they stick around and produce more material that can become more mature that the awesomeness that’s on display here, then I don’t see why Evocator can’t and won’t skyrocket through the underground.
