Coffin Lurker – Foul and Defiled

The world of doom and all that it can contain is truly a marvel the likes of which does not exist anywhere else in the entirety of the music world, and it’s thanks to such a unique identity that we’re still able to get standout acts that manage to not only impress but defy conventional notions. It can very much seem at times that there is a war going on for who can create the loudest, heaviest, darkest, and most gripping doom out there with many acts making worthy attempts but still falling short. It’s when we get a qualifying record, though, that we’re in for an experience that’s not quite like anything else like what Coffin Lurker has exhumed for their debut album.

It’s when we get doom that really transcends the descriptor of “thick” that we know we’re getting into the realm nasty parts of doom that aren’t to be underestimated as it can quickly become quite a dark place that isn’t made for the uninitiated with everything going into the work at hand purposefully made to beat your very soul down. That’s just the very beginning of what’s to be found within “Foul and Defiled” as Coffin Lurker truly goes out of their way to carefully craft a vicious experience that only the most astute of doom connoiseurs can find solace in as the very sky comes down at the start of this record with every variety of undeath, darkness, and miasmas borne out of this ungodly heaviness. The word suffocating is far too descriptive for an album like this as it becomes extremely clear right out of the gate that Coffin Lurker seeks to snuff all the light of the universe to make Death the reigning entity, and it’s through undeniable power and riffs that are devilishly calculated that they succeed stupendously at providing a more than worthwhile experience on just their debut album to already make them a name that must have an eye kept on. Much like Eremit, Drown, or even Bell Witch, there’s a patient but indomitable power that’s to be found at every turn in this record, and it’ll be the unsuspecting that finds themselves the most susceptible to its malice while many of us will be left entranced as the end of existence unfolds before our unworthy eyes.

We could scour for hours and find dozens of releases from dozens of doom acts out there shooting for next level heaviness that leaves an impact with many of them only leaving us wanting more which makes discoveries like Coffin Lurker all the more entrancing for how they truly standout from the competition like few others. Everything about “Foul and Defiled” is made specifically to be away at flesh and spirit in such fashion that the pain becomes almost enjoyable, but it’s in these five tracks that Coffin Lurker is careful not let pleasure be felt by anyone other than themselves as the very fibers of reality peel away at their presence.
