What, exactly, is it about Australia? The continent has been no less than bountiful when it comes to churning out numerous acts of immense quality of all styles, metal included, and it has yet to show any signs of slowing down. While bands like Depravity, Portal, and Earth Rot may be what many of us think of as key Australian death metal acts, there is somehow always room for more. Crypt Crawler has been putting out material for barely three years now, but it’s already with their second full-length that they’re set to assault the west coast of Australia to become the next name of Australian death metal that demands to be heard.

When I take into consideration all the bands that have graced my ears that have come from Australia, especially when it comes to death metal, the route of the truly unrelenting and next level heaviness is immediately what comes to my mind with constant quality being found throughout every effort from each act. With their latest work, Crypt Crawler is definitely of the same cut but it’s with their own vision in mind that they not only set out to create a death metal vision that can stand out in an immensely dense scene but sound distinct in virtually every aspect and achieve wild success. In its most basic form, that’s precisely what’s to be found within all that “Future Usurper” throws upon the listener. Still maintaining that supreme presence of utter domination, it’s through riffs and the expert use of mid-tempo riffage that becomes downright deadly right out of the gate, and it’s not until “Future Usurper” grinds to a halt that we get properly spared from the unapologetic onslaught that is on full display the moment you hit the play button. It’s in every essence for the whole of the record that we get peak Australian death metal the likes of which cannot be denied in any form, and it’s brought with even more emphasis given the simple reminder of this being just the second full-length offering from these guys.

This is death metal that is the very definition of compelling as Crypt Crawler truly dug deep to bring this performance to life in such glorious fashion with the end result being an absolutely staggering album that is only fitting to have been born out of the mind and talents of Australians to add even more credence to the thought that Australia is one of the best modern hubs for grandiose death metal. Just a few tracks from “Future Usurper” is enough to convince many with the entire work being downright stunning in just about every possible category.
