To see black metal become fused with many different styles in such a way that makes for a performance that cannot be considered anything other than striking isn’t as uncommon as one may suspect, but to see it done in a form that’s damn near applause-worthy isn’t common enough. Of all the bands that have accomplished such a wondrous feat, it was before today that Dödsrit would not be among them. However, it’s upon investigating their latest work that I realize just how grand of a mistake that is.

While it may not be obvious at first how much Dödsrit has tweaked the sound of black metal to fit their own style to significant effect, a full listen of all that is accomplished within the wooded depths of “Mortal Coil” will show in splendid glory just how exactly Dödsrit has managed to find their sound in this vast soundscape along with how to execute to it to an utterly voracious extent. With an eleven-minute opener that caught me right off guard to the point that it was downright surprising, Dödsrit sets the tone for their third full-length album right out of the gate with the ensuing three dense tracks showing us just how talented this Swedish act has brought together a style and style such that this performance is the very definition of staggering. It’s throughout every given turn for “Mortal Coil” that the overall experience of this work continues to grow by the minute with the various different styles that are put into this work culminating into a cohesive sound that is beyond compelling with every creative choice that Dödsrit makes being born out of both immense talent and an unparalleled understanding of their particular craft.

Even in its calmest moments and most basic of executions, it’s the undeniable entirety of “Mortal Coil” that Dödsrit more than proves themselves to be a name that every fan of black metal must know. It could very well be considered as one of the most compelling works that black metal has seen this year up to now, and I won’t be the one to defy such a description.
