Cavern Deep – s/t

There are some works that are virtually destined to be called genius. However, genius comes in many different variations with the strength of such genius varying from one work to the next especially when it comes to the complexity of the offering at hand. I find works from the likes of Inter Arma and Eremit to be genius, but others find far simpler matters infinitely more so. When it comes to the debut from Cavern Deep, however, I can only hope that many will also view this work as genius.

A concept album is always something that I’ll always enjoy sinking my teeth into for what’s already an immense work of art containing a secondary work within it that takes another level of talent all together in order to be brought to life even half well. But, what we get here from the debut work of Cavern Deep is already so much of what we could ask of a work like this which already checks off all the right boxes for everything needed to make an album like this as engaging as the end result fortunately became. Following fifty adventurers down into cavernous deeps to gain treasure for themselves, it’s in the halls of plant-borne light that the men are slowly picked off one by one while the descending terrors from a dense jungle-garden, endless abyss, and the very sight of the continuous stairs that invoke fear are given a soundtrack of grinding riffs stretched out across a tantalizing expanse that is all but enthralling to immerse yourself in. Guided by the impartial yet evocative vocals, it’s for the whole of the eponymous work that Cavern Deep does nothing but create for the listening an extremely engaging listen that’s as horrifying as it is entertaining with every given factor in these eight tracks working together seamlessly to leave me wondering how this creation could be called anything other than genius.

The vast realm of doom will always have exemplary tales for us to dive into with majestic works of riffage and heaviness to be found alongside those stories in exquisite detail, and it is absolutely with their debut album that Cavern Deep has created something more than worthy of mention when we talk about albums that succeed such an ambitious concept. It’s in one fantastic swoop that Cavern Deep has instantly made them a name to have an eye kept on, and I’ll be very upset if I let any work from this act go under my radar.
