The word “dissonant” seems to get tossed around a lot when considering what a lot of death and black metal manage to create when they’re brought together, but it’s not nearly often enough that it’s a fitting descriptor as far too many use the word far too loosely. But when it does fit, it couldn’t a better description with very few other words in language being able to capture in one word what’s done. With their debut album, though, Concilium more than fits the bill to earn being called such.
With only the darkest of tones that throw this record into a dense cloak filled with flightless voids that are all but inescapable, it’s in each of the six tracks that make up the hopeless depths of “Desecration” an impressive listen for all that it brings forth. What’s also immense of this work is how it’s the debut from Concilium, and it’s already shown to us that the band has a staggering sound along with an undeniable grip on their extremely caustic sound that only pulls the listener in further into their swirling vortex of sheer darkness that is downright all-consuming. It’s a true task to listen to with how thick and dense the material is virtually right out of the gate as it’s for the whole of “Desecration” that Concilium doesn’t shy away one bit from making the listener dig for the goodies that are plentiful to extract from all that the record has in store should we be committed enough to excavate for them. The ensuing result makes this debut a fascinating work to dive into with every nook and cranny providing some fresh morsel to devour in a wild scramble before “Desecration” becomes so desperate to consume that it turns on itself in the ultimate form of blasphemy that’s all too fitting for this unyielding creation.
An album like this that manages to be as voracious as possible while still executing everything that’s needed for a satisfying and interesting listen will always have something worth digging into, and that couldn’t be any further from the truth and reality that’s happening here with “Desecration”. Concilium has already done a staggering job with this debut, and it’s surely only with the gift of time that their caustic art will be honed to a dangerous extent.
