If you ask me, Mexico is one of the countries that are wildly underrated for all that they offer to the world of heavy music with their ranks increasing in excellence year after year. For some time, though, I can’t help but feel that one of their best performances of death metal has been around for a few years without the necessary fanfare that they deserve. Since the start, Morbid Messiah has been an entity that demands to be heard, and it’s with their latest EP that only furthers that glorious undeath!
It’s right out of the gate that Morbid Messiah appears to be one of those bands that is straight from the grimy belly of the seething underground that takes no prisoners and spills blood anywhere they go, and one who would assume that would be exactly spot on to assume such with that being just the very start of what’s to be had when diving into the dark, rotting world that Morbid Messiah has complete dominion over. Their particularly nasty brand of maggot-ridden riffs and grimy vocals are the exact kind of material that the underground has long been craving for, and it’s in every waking moment of “Disgorged in the Coffin” that Morbid Messiah not only furthers their particular take of death metal like this but elevate it. To bathe yourself in the very essence of their latest EP is to bury yourself into the deepest reaches of what makes the underground such a vicious place to visit even for a seasoned excavator or fresh digger of gold with even the classic tricks that Morbid Messiah pull here tasting no less than bewildering and delicious. It’s the next step in their evolution, and even with borrowed audio clips from film used to surprising effect, “Disgorged in the Coffin” more than lives up to the band’s largely unheralded reputation with every inch of the work being acidic to the touch, but all the more alluring because of it.
This is far from a leap in their sound by any means, but their expertise with it has only gotten all the deadlier because of their exposure to it and I can’t help but feel that there’s very little keeping Morbid Messiah from getting even more vicious as the years go on. “Disgorged in the Coffin” may not seem like much on the surface, but with the proliferation of albums that this band cranks out that we’re sure to get even more underground nastiness that we can never truly get enough of.
“Disgorged in the Coffin” releases on September 24th!
