When we have a conversation about anything related to post-metal or post-rock, it tends to be the latter that dominates conversations simply due to the sheer volume of rock acts that take on post elements as opposed to its metal counterpart that doesn’t often stray into that territory without greatly relying on other styles to make for a more expansive listen. Rarely do we get a most pure post-metal experience that we can really fall into, but it does seem that whenever one comes around it’s absolutely something that must be heard. With their latest work, Nuummite certifiably adds credence to that train of thought.
An important part about post-metal more than any other style, if you ask me, is to make sure that things are kept interesting given the nature of the sound that can effortlessly dive and weave in and out of vast atmospheres, varying levels of heaviness, and across all sorts of different backdrops in the span of a single song, but it’s imperative that if you’re going to pack so much into so little time that you give each moment time to breathe and become a morsel more than worthy of being savored over. In just about every single way, Nuummite clearly understands that precedent with the eleven tracks that we’re presented with here for “Celestial Triarchy” not just being compelling right from the start, but it’s for the whole run of the record that this band goes out of their way to try new things to both keep the listener guessing as to just what exactly they’re going to pull next as well as to keep things interesting for them as musicians. You can feel them having a great time not only playing around with vocals despite them being self-described as an instrumental act with even the influence of death and black metal making calculated appearances in various moments throughout the work despite a clearly surrealistic vision in mind which not only gives “Celestial Triarchy” a great sense of diversity for its runtime, but a truly layered listen that has so much to offer for anyone willing to dive into all that it offers. And I cannot stress this enough when I say that this record is absolutely worth diving into for even though this isn’t at all the greatest work of its kind that I’ve heard, there’s no way for me to deny the grandeur on full display here for the utter whole of “Celestial Triarchy” and all the talent that Nuummite brings to the table in absolute boatloads.
With all the many different styles that are rife throughout the deep and ever-expanding world of metal, post-metal is one that deserves to be greatly explored and deepened in its pure form as there’s so much potential and glory that’s to be had within those halls that are just waiting to be tapped into with bands like Nuummite really giving us proper examples as to what exactly could happen when a worthwhile act manages to bring to the table something utterly tantalizing. “Celestial Triarchy” is not only a bold debut, but a beyond-promising one at that which immediately makes Nuummite a name to be remembered once they hopefully return and the very mention of this record to be held in respectful reverence.
