Cutterred Flesh – Sharing is Caring

It’s not terribly often that I can come into the world of brutal death metal and find myself coming out on the other side with a record of any choice and being undeniably satisfied with what I have emerged with. That happens maybe a couple of times in a given year at best with the style not being for me more often than not, but I still manage to find myself surprised every so often. Right from the cover, Cutterred Flesh has a slightly different vibe than what many other acts of the style bring to the table, and I’m happy to say that they also do much more than most others of the sound find themselves doing over and over again.

Humor is far from uncommon out of this particular corner of death metal with it contrasting with the sheer ferocity of everything surrounding it making for a pretty good joke for many, but that doesn’t really mean anything when that’s really all there is to a given album when there isn’t much else to be had. Taking a look at the discography of Cutterred Flesh, they look to me as not really having embraced humor with their previous works, but they take conservatively for their forthcoming assault, “Sharing is Caring”, but they don’t let themselves get lost in it. Rather, it’s used as a very well-used spice that makes their immensely caustic brand of voracious death metal all the tastier as they don’t over-season the whole work with that one, single, repetitive spice. Sprinkle it on top of wild mood swings that make “Sharing is Caring” damn near unpredictable in its direction and tone, a tremendous sense of what not only what they’re capable of as a band but what the very style can pull off, and, arguably most importantly, how to make it all satisfying for the listener such that they’ll keep coming back time after time even after being pummeled to an unrecognizable heap of viscera that is still somehow begging for more. Cutterred Flesh has really done an outstanding job here for all that they brought to the table and still managed to make so alluring even while being steeped in a style that is all but known for how impenetrable it is to the very core, yet it’s in spite of that which this band has executed a work that should not be hailed as anything short of monolithic.

Such an effort like this is a surprise right from the beginning, and you know you found something good when you have to make sure the album as a whole is on repeat so that the pummeling does not stop! Incredibly few brutal death metal bands like this are able to deliver a record as cohesive and interesting as what Cutterred Flesh has crafted here for their fifth full-length, showing us that they still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves with “Sharing is Caring” surely not being the last nor the least of them.

“Sharing is Caring” releases on December 3rd via Transcending Obscurity Records!
