Before a few years ago, the realm of technical death metal was quite an exclusive corner of extreme metal that didn’t have very many participants in its with their reach being limited at best even if the musicianship was always something to be heard and respected ever since the beginning. It goes without saying that the style has come into a renaissance all of its own that we still find ourselves in the midst of with Inferi being one of the biggest names that we can still constantly rely on with each release that they deliver being nothing short of everything that we should come to expect from a peak performance of tech-death. With the brand new work of “Vile Genesis”, the train of devastation just keeps on rolling.
While I would love to sit here and say that every Inferi record feels like an experience that’s all its own with the band always making sure each release has its own personality in some form or another, that just simply isn’t true. But where that could very easily lead to a slow decline in enjoyability for me with a band like this, it’s really the raw musicianship and technicality of these albums that make them always a treat to dive into as the very legend of Inferi grows by the year whether they release brand new material in the form of a full-length or an EP or a redux of older material to bring it up to their current standards. All of that and more allows “Vile Genesis” to become yet another exquisite work of the style that relies on Inferi’s tasteful menagerie of melodies that keeps this material from straying into a maddening array of tenacious musicianship that is no less brain-melting than when we first heard it, if not much more so potent with how pristine Inferi has become at their particularly corrosive craft. This is an experience that can only be likened to that of Inferi with the band having a sound that is certifiably their own even if there are plenty of other bands out there that try to emulate it whether out of laziness or reverence, yet it’s even after fourteen years of becoming icons of technical death metal that Inferi still has yet to disappoint with everything about “Vile Genesis” simply adding to their legend.
In no short order, what we get here in these eight tracks cannot be considered anything other than an immaculate experience for all that Inferi is when we take into consideration the quality, technical prowess, and unparalleled heaviness that we’ve come to associate with the name that all of their places and much more for this effort. Vile in every way except in way of entertainment, “Vile Genesis” is everything that is should be.
