When I think of quality Swedish death metal the likes of which most of us can rarely get enough of, there are plenty of names that come to our minds in a list that seems damn near endless at times. We could be talking about what’s already come forth for days before even remembering that there’s a clear and steady stream of new bands coming out of the woodwork every single year, making the list all the more monstrous. As one of the latest to be added, Necrophagous is a brand new name to our ears but it’s the power and talent behind the act that is all but unfamiliar to us with their debut effort being the definition of Swedish power!
With all three of the members of Necrophagous being a part of the renowned Entrails at some point in time, it becomes tempted to drawn a line between the two as they walk down what could easily be seen as the same stylistic route, but that would be to discredit what this band has accomplished on their debut and consider it little more than a band eternally living in the shadow of another. In every possible way, Necrophagous is its own creation that deserves to be treated as such, and it’s the eleven tracks of their debut assault, “In Chaos Ascend”, that this band manages to deliver death metal that goes right for the throat without hesitation as we’re treated to a true menagerie of riffage and Swedish glory. There’s a particular sense of potency that graces the very essence of this record such that it becomes not just alluring to anyone who has an ear for this brand of death metal, but it quickly allows the very presence of Necrophagous to grow to a size nigh on intimidating as the album goes on to both sink its jagged hooks into you with full force as well as deliver the exact kind of Swedish death metal to ring in the new year the likes of which we could’ve only asked for with a band as deadly as Necrophagous being all but a long shot when hoping for something like that. Without hesitation or substantial mishap, it’s “In Chaos Ascend” that starts the name of Necrophagous at an incredibly high position for all that it accomplishes on its very first effort, and given the talent of everyone behind the name I can only fathom that it won’t be long before we hear from them again and it is almost damn sure to somehow leap over the enviably high bar that’s been set with this debut.
Such an effort is something that we don’t get as often as it may feel time to time simply because of the massive number of new bands with worthwhile debuts coming out, but I cannot stress enough just how much the experience and passion behind Necrophagous has worked certifiable wonders for this creation. It’s eleven vicious tracks of devastation that cannot be ignored by anyone who finds themselves at all entranced by everything that is brought to the table in this release with “In Chaos Ascend” being all but the perfect name for this immense debut that shows us what Necrophagous is truly capable of right out of the gate with no end to the devastation from beyond in sight.
