Khemmis – Deceiver

The glorious world of Bandcamp has been a true boon to those of us who are constantly searching the underground for new material since it has brought thousands upon thousands of fresh names to our speakers with many becoming the new faces of the style as we slowly start to search for bands to take up the mantle from passing greats. Khemmis has been an absolute tour de force since their very first outing with their particular brand of S-class doom being what many people not only strive for but tirelessly seek for day in and day out. Time has been possibly the greatest friend to this unit as they seem to have only gotten better with time, and that proves to be no different on their fourth full-length opus that has already left its mark on the scene and it’s not even out yet.

There’s a select group of bands that always seem to cause a massive amount of waves across multiple scenes and virtually the whole of the underground whenever they release new material, and it really does feel as though Khemmis was one of the first metal bands to really achieve that during the start of the golden age of Bandcamp when they started their massive ride what was six years ago at this point, and it’s since then they haven’t looked back with every record being compelling, heavy, and always something to behold. As if you needed me to tell you, “Deceiver” proves to only further that insane trend. Just six tracks adorn this fresh full-length but the record comes far more than packed to scratch the itch for any fans of Khemmis, doom as a whole, or anyone who just wants something that’s outright awesome right from the beginning as Khemmis’s knack for exhilarating intoxication is at an all-time high here with their patience matching their potency to the point where stopping at any point in these 41 minutes is to practically spit in the very face of the majesty flowing into your ears. If it’s not the riffs that grip you right from the beginning then it should be some combination of the tantalizing vocals, a fascinating display of curated power, or the raw, impeccable musicianship that win over the soul with virtually little effort as “Deceiver” commands everyone’s attention right out of the gate where the experience as a whole culminates into a truly powerful creation in every aspect from its cover to the very soul that’s poured into every note of every moment.

It feels as though the very stars of doom are aligning on us particularly bright in these last few weeks with some truly remarkable creations being brought before our eyes with the arrival of Khemmis feeling almost prophetic with everything leading up to it and all that it brings forth. A new creation from this act is always cause for celebration, and it’s at every turn that “Deceiver” proves to be a work deserving of far more than simple celebration, but, rather, reverence of a truly special kind.

“Deceiver” releases on November 19th via Nuclear Blast!
