We could literally pull up a map of all of Europe, close our eyes, throw a dart, and be confident that wherever the dart lands we’ll find more than enough captivating acts of metal the likes of which not only continue to astound but keep us coming back year after year. Greece is easily one of the places that I feel doesn’t get enough credit despite being absolutely crawling with quality the likes of which many would think would only come out of the more northern reaches of the continent. Residing well within the deep crevices of the underground, Abyssus has been a real boon of classic death metal the likes of which many are happy to have found at all, and it’s with their second full-length, their first in seven years, that they’re poised to rise at a meteoric rate.
Ignoring the substantial gap between their full-length deliveries, Abyssus has been anything but silent in their tasteful corner of the underground that pays true homage to some of the true greats that death metal has brought to us over the years and it’s in every way that Abyssus has not only carried on that legacy with their numerous EPs and splits but never lowering themselves to become much more than cheap rip-offs riding on the coattails of those who found success before them. In just about every way, it’s with the seven tracks brought forth in “Death Revival” that sees Abyssus traveling down the path of homage more adeptly than ever before with more than enough scope, power, and intrigue to show us that their very own power is not something to turn away. It’s right out of the gate that we can feel an increase in the very sound of Abyssus for all that it achieves in its heaviness and almost twitchy nature as Abyssus’s death metal injected with several healthy doses of thrash with each and every track of this bold excursion into the wasteland never once offering surrender or reprieve as the persistent quintet makes a fantastic effort that is everything that old school death metal of this variety should be from the stark but reasonable diversity between tracks, intoxicating essence that permeates every possible facet of “Death Revival”, and the raw tenacity that Abyssus has in absolute spades in order to bring their sound to life while stilling making it feel fresh, invigorating, and so much of what the everyday excavator of quality death metal could use more of.
When a record of any sound can keep your attention unabated from beginning to end without exception, it makes for a truly standout listen the likes of which won’t be leaving your brain anytime soon and it’s with real style and power that Abyssus achieves it with death metal in glorious fashion for their latest full-length that’s arguably their best work as a whole to date. There isn’t much else the Greek underground could have asked for to get the ball rolling on a great note at the very start of the year, and it’s with everything that “Death Revival” is that will be held as the standard for Greek intensity for some time.
