It can often feel as though death metal is a singular sound despite having tons of different varying branches that keeps the genre going to fantastic reaches far beyond the original scope of the style for people like me, but it’s in every way that the original sound of the style still has so much more to offer despite arguably being done to death. The argument can be made that virtually anyone can be tossed one of many formulas for successful death metal and pull it off to a relative degree, but I disagree since it still takes a certain drive and attitude to deliver a performance that’s both satisfying and utterly crushing. With their brand new EP, Kadavereich more than show their capacity to bring it to the table.
Throughout my years of searching down to the very floor of the underground, it became apparent after not very long that accidental repetition is something that is all but rampant throughout many different scenes with throngs upon throngs of bands creating what’s virtually the same sound with the simple goal of creating material that is very much their own without doing anything fantastically new or pushing any sort of boundaries; a band that simply wants to perform the style they love hearing. In the case of Kadavereich, we have an all but immaculate example of such. At no point in the 19 minutes that make up the four tracks of “Radiance of Doom” does this band falter in their vision to paint the very whole of the world of fresh, steaming blood as it’s with their vicious instruments and massive presence that pays tribute to the very core of what death metal has always been without once leaning too hard on those trends to make for an easier experience whether it be for the listener or themselves as musicians when it came to creating the material itself. Rather, they leaned full into the style whole-heartedly to deliver a performance that is far from one-dimensional, rife for expansion given the gift of time, and an all but eviscerating listen between the chainsaw-like riffs, unspeakable brutality that adorns every possible moment of the EP, and the unforgiving assault that Kadavereich puts all of their heart, soul, and malevolence into at all times.
It’s all brought together to make for what can be called a by-the-books creation in a negative light, but it’s the passion and intensity with which Kadavereich works to their utmost advantage in order to make for one hell of an entrance to the underground. There’s more than plenty for any fan of death metal to enjoy with all that makes up “Radiance of Doom” with how much it checks off all the right boxes to make for a scathing work of the style that’s not to be ignored or looked down upon with those foolish enough to do so effortlessly crushed and pummeled into the ground.
