Earthwomb – Becoming Immanence

Of all the facets of anything in regards to atmospheric material that never once fails to hold my attention, it’s the mere success of it that can leave me scratching my head as to how exactly it was executed so well. To make an aural creation specifically, without any sort of proper visual aid, put forth a particular image before the eyes of the listener is utterly fascinating to me and is easily one of the biggest pieces of why I always find myself surrounded by atmospheric material with the black metal varieties, in particular, striking a chord with me somewhere. Simply to see it achieved in a competent form is a joy, but to see it taken a step further to become found alongside power, musicianship, and soul in such a captivating form is to have come across something utterly wondrous. In essence, that’s precisely what Earthwomb has crafted here.

Whenever anybody going into a new band of any kind, the name always plays a big part in that first impression no matter how small of an inkling it results in. Whether it’s in a parody of another or a nuanced take on a specific theme without revealing too much in order to not make anything too obvious at first. The very name of Earthwomb can be taken in many different names, but it’s in the world of atmospheric black metal that the meaning behind the name doesn’t exactly become obvious, but it’s not hard to draw an immediate line between the name, the theme, and the style itself which makes for an impression that this should be a roughly typical work that might have something interesting within. “Typical” is possibly the furthest word that I would dare use to describe what has been brought forth here in the seven tracks of “Becoming Immanence”. Taking on themes of nature as well as embodying all the chaos that comes with such a wonder, there isn’t a single facet that makes up this EP that doesn’t make this feel like the best possible debut that Earthwomb could’ve put forth with each song working off the one that came before while still flowing into the next piece. It makes for a cohesive listen that shows us right out of the gate that Earthwomb is nowhere near some pretentious black metal act putting forth a message that is noble but with a sound that falls flat, and with nothing throughout each moment of “Becoming Immanence” standing out as anything that could be conceived as a negative I truly do wonder what else this act is capable of with all that’s been put forth in this EP all but delectable in every form.

It would normally be after at least one or two releases that a band would really start to hone in on the vision of what sound they want to create as a cohesive unit with it not being very often that we can see it come to life in such glorious detail on a debut effort, but that’s precisely what Earthwomb has provided us with here in fantastic detail. There is loads to unpack with all that “Becoming Immanence” brings to the table, and I can only hope that it won’t be long before we hear more from Earthwomb with its compelling brand of precise dark power.
