The Last of Lucy – Moksha

I’ve said it many times before and I refuse to cave on it so I will keep saying it: the realm of technical death metal is easily one of the most interesting regions in all of modern death metal. With it being the fastest-growing effortlessly adding to its appeal for many, it’s the vast swathe of high-quality acts that seem to be dishing out material every month, always keeping us on our toes, that keep throngs of us coming back as the stakes are constantly being raised and the craziness along with it. We could sit here for hours and talk about numerous acts that have either come out of nowhere to stun on their first attempts or names that have climbed the ranks to really show us what they’re made of after being given the gift of time. Having only one full-length and two EPs to their name before this, it’s with their forthcoming effort that The Last of Lucy has more than earned their time in the spotlight with the bewildering display of existential chaos that is their sophomore full-length album.

Armed with an utterly gorgeous cover art that provides a glorious glimpse into this record that gives us vibes that are definitely in line with what many have come to think of with the current trends of technical death metal, it’s with the beautiful array of colors and uncompromising presence that The Last of Lucy has made a monstrous effort of the style that does more than enough justice to get the style off on the best foot possible virtually right after the start of the new year. It’s the very title of “Moksha”, though, that catches my eye and feels more than perfect for such an eviscerating album and all that it brings forward given how it stems from Hindu, Buddhist, etc. for liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth that also allows oneself to break free from the very idea of karma itself which, if you ask me, can very easily take a violent form with The Last of Lucy capturing what would surely be one of its most chaotic iterations with every ounce of this record capturing that concept in a vicious form that would almost certainly fail in less capable hands. Breaking free from those chains is a breathless effort whether it be on purpose or not, but it’s at every possible turn of this ten-track assault that The Last of Lucy puts forth an all-engrossing offensive of ultimate carnage that is all but relentless to purge all that come before this sonic onslaught with only the seasoned being able to bask in this dazzling display of peak musicianship, blistering speed and heaviness, and absolutely voracious tenacity.

Technical death metal keeps producing more bands like this on a monthly basis to the point that it feels like a true task to keep up with it all with there somehow being highlights to be had even in amongst such high-quality bands that are all but unrelenting, and I can’t help but feel that The Last of Lucy has more than earned their five minutes of fame with everything that they’ve delivered with this supremely blistering record that demands attention from the tech-death scene at large. “Moksha” has so much to offer for virtually every fan of what the style has become in its modern incarnation for it’s an act that is to be heard in order to be believed, and I can only hope that many will agree with me in that assessment.
