The very reaches of psychedelic rock truly know extremely few boundaries, if any at all, and there have always been acts that I’ve been attracted to without thought simply because of how they push the sound to new reaches and show us just how else its glory can be perpetuated. Last year, I was shown a case that was effortlessly one of the more interesting and effective in its particular craft by the name of Betty Benedeadly. With its previous work, this act showed us just how effective it can be with this follow-up all but wondrously fitting.
The act’s EP from last year, “From the Mesa”, was easily one of the more interesting performances of its ilk, and I say that without a single shred of doubt given the unique performance that we were treated to in just three tracks, but it’s now with the fresh 4-track EP, “The Adventures of Mabel & Carter”, that we are able to take another truly gorgeous excursion across the sands and between the buttes the likes of which I don’t think we could get anywhere else. Still holding an instrumental edge alongside an undeniable twang that is ever so tasteful that acts as the soul and powerhouse of what’s brought forth here, and it would be a gross understatement to say that this act has succeeded in enlightening the desert in a way that extremely few have ever been able to accomplish in such potency. The extreme levels of trippiness are just the very beginnings of what’s to be found within the 15 minutes that are to become lost in for the duration of “The Adventures of Mabel & Carter” with only the everlasting sun as the guide we have while the rocks speak our names and the very flickering of the fire tells us the very wonders of the world. It’s a brief performance that definitely leaves you wanting more simply because of how addictive it all is, but it’s the very essence of this EP that is entrancing right from the beginning with Betty Benedeadly yet again showing how just how far the reaches of the style can be stretched with the hidden treasures of the desert proving to be all but immensely bountiful for both the style and this hypnotic act.
When I first heard Betty Benedeadly not even a year ago, I knew that this act would prove to be something special with the boon of time and more meditations under the cool starry night sky and it’s everything conjured to bring this EP to life that I feel all but reinforced in my belief. “The Adventures of Mabel & Carter” is another marvel that has come down from the stony mountains to bask in the lowland sun with naught but the future that was foretold in the light of the campfire which tells us that, surely, Betty Benedeadly will not be going anywhere so long as the Joshua trees provide enlightenment and the desert inspires.
