The many different forms of heaviness will never cease to amaze me and will likely never run out of excellence even if that means treading the same grounds over and over again until the end of days, but it’s even now that many still manage to find something fresh even if what we’re dealing with is merely a simple pile of riffs. It’s wonderful to witness what kind of grandeur even the smallest of bands rising out of the very floor of the underground can craft with some of the most intriguing material effortlessly to be found therein. Moonstone fits that very description to an absolute tee with their latest EP being all but perfect for any proper heavy connoisseur out there looking for real potential.
Right away, the eye is drawn towards the fact that the tracklist of “1904” consists of only two tracks with both of them stretching a good deal over ten minutes in length. That’s a real draw, isn’t it? The very draw of doom metal like that where we see it being real strewn out across a good deal of time is what constantly brings people like me back for all that it can offer and all that can be put into every one of those minutes and even just a few minutes of what Moonstone offers to us here in this EP shows us just how apt they are at bringing such a glorious concept to wondrous reality. Not a single minute is wasted or not used to the maximum potential for this release as it’s every feasible moment of “1904” that Moonstone has been able to deliver to us a fantastic combination of crushing doom, sludge that teeters on the very edge of cosmic-like, clear stoner influences, and more than a little of some psychedelia that all come crashing together in such an exquisite form that it takes every fiber of my being to not remain in the midst of such grandeur even after immersing myself in these two tracks from what’s been almost half a day straight at this point. It’s an utterly gripping, intoxicating experience that brings together some of the best aspects of the doom underground in all of its many different forms without compromisation or a lack of commitment in delivering it in absolute heaps in a form that cannot be considered anything short of monolithic for all that it accomplishes and brings to the table.
To scour the underground is to find loads and loads of talent that will seemingly never cease in their numbers, but it’s when you come across something like Moonstone that you can’t help but realize that something like Moonstone is clearly a cut above the rest with either of these tracks more than enough proof that on their own but together they create something truly powerful. There isn’t a shred of “1904” that doesn’t pull you into its thick, sludgy performance loaded with atmosphere that has so much to offer its listeners around every corner, and I just know that this EP is just a hint of what this new band is capable of.
