Just when you think you’ve seen a good bit of all that there is to discover in ways of creativity throughout the underground, there’s always at least one act that’s ready to come around at any given moment to blow your mind wide open and show you just how foolish you were to think that you might have seen it all. There is plenty to offer such a revelation across the endless expanse of the underground, but it’s with bands like Eaters of the Soil that I think we get some of the best examples of exactly how it can be done. This band already proved that not even a year ago, but it’s clear they have much more to offer us than we may have initially thought.

It tends to be that when the world of doom dips into the uncontrollable nature of experimentalism that we see it goes towards the extremes of heaviness and, especially, length where we begin to see some truly monolithic creations that rattle our very foundations of what it means to be music, yet that’s simply not the route that some take. Eaters of the Soil showed us a deadly fusion of jazz into their instrumental and nihilistic approach for their 2021 debut EP, and it’s with the sequel effort that Eaters of the Soil really show us just how adept they are at their viciously potent craft. A broadly instrumental creation, it’s through the use of vocal samples that really propel the themes and overtones of the EP to really drive home the darker feel that this piece has compared to its predecessor with the implementation of boldly use orchestral instruments from a trombone and saxophone playing integral parts to the many layers of this creation while the noise elements truly make this a cerebral listen that can be compared to few others. Brought together, they quickly accumulate to make for an utterly unforgiving listen that doesn’t lack in potency whatsoever and knows precisely when to pull back such that it can go back in full force for an even deadlier pummel that is the very definition of vicious for all that it accomplishes.

It truly feels like the natural evolution of Eaters of the Soil has taken place here, and it makes the mind go absolutely crazy as to what else they’re able to bring to the table as their craft becomes even more honed and voracious with the compliment of the years and the clear perseverance that they wield with real tenacity. Any doubters should simply look into the depths of what this latest EP has brought to the table as the deepest reaches of nihilism seem to bless this powerful release.
