The sheer diversity in the very sound of any given style in the vast spectrum of metal is always the sort of thing that continuously impresses me on a daily basis and will likely never cease doing so. In particular, it’s long been black metal that has held my attention and vast curiosity for all that it is able to accomplish in what feels like infinite different forms, and I’ve never once been silent about my fascination with it nor my quest to find as much as I can. Tonight, my search led me into the depths of Noircure’s debut album only to quickly find it the exact kind of work that I’m always looking for whether I know it or not.
There’s no denying that all the way back to the very beginnings of the sound, black metal has been an utterly vicious craft that has rarely ever left any survivors in its wake if any at all with the prospect of beauty within the sound feeling just as elusive as it can be exquisite. When a band does dare to bring it to the table, however, there are very few factors that can detract from the glorious performance should it simply be put in the right hands which is slowly becoming a much more common reality despite the odds, and it’s here that Noircure adds their name to the collection of acts that manage to bring it forth and succeeded wildly where many others may feel flat. Throughout the seven tracks that adorn “Kyrie”, it becomes apparent very quickly that Noircure is just as capable of delivering to us material that’s damn near scathing when it comes to how unyielding black metal can be, but the gorgeous atmospheres and grand passages of blackgaze are what gain the limelight for this creation as the real draw of the contrasting listen on a whole that achieves a lot more than what may seem o be the case at first. There isn’t a single moment in the glory of such ethereal-esque wonder that doesn’t feel delicately crafted in order to really make “Kyrie” a deep but exceedingly well-rounded experience that manages to keep on giving as we go from one minute to the very next, riveted the whole time as we become all but engrossed by what Noircure is able to bring to the table.
The very craft of blackgaze and the related avenues of atmospheric black metal is one that’s constantly changing with all the talent and potential that are slowly coming into the scene year after year to really transform the sound into something that simply cannot be ignored with Noircure simply being one the very latest to do so. To fall into “Kyrie” is to become one with a form of the sound that gives us a true glimpse as to what it is slowly becoming, and I don’t think anyone would argue with the results and the grandeur that’s to be had around virtually every corner of this captivating effort.
“Kyrie” releases on February 18th via Avantgarde Music!
