Black Sky Giant – End of Days Pilgrimage

Whenever a band managees to come around way ahead of my expectations, rarely does it lead to a situation where I find myself wanting either more or thinking that a little bit more time would’ve been bountiful. That tends to happen when we’re dealing in years, but when a band can go only a few months before releasing new material we can easily be dealing dangerously should a band not be giving the proper time necessary to really refine their work. In the case of Black Sky Giant, they’ve been on a real roll ever since their debut with my discovery of them via last year’s album, “Falling Mothership”, being a real treat. Not even eight months later, this band is back with what’s possibly their best creation yet.

When I first came upon Black Space Giant what’s currently two months ago at this point, I don’t think I would’ve believed anyone outside the band if they said that it’d be a sheer fraction of a year before we would hear from the band again, and I don’t think I have any complaints about experiencing their magnificent sound this soon. Right away, before even hearing a note, anyone who’s heard this band before knows that anyone who dives into this creation is diving into an effort that’s as massive as it is crisp in its riffs and presence with naught to be had but what it means to really bring glory to instrumental rock and doom. And doom most indeed for it’s with the very whole of “End of Days Pilgrimage” definitely allows Black Sky Giant to show off their doom metal tendencies to dramatic effect with all but one of these tracks stretching beyond seven minutes in length with two even going past ten, and to say they executed it with real quality and vision would be to put it incredibly lightly. Even the band’s sense of what it means to maximize the potential on being instrumental feels somehow far more mature than what it already was just last year! Throughout the very whole of “End of Days Pilgrimage” we’re given an absolute treat of wonders the likes of which only high-class instrumental heaviness can deliver in any capacity with the grand euphoria to match, and it’s even with knowing that this is the fourth creation from Black Sky Giant that I can’t help but feel that it’s even here we can see how they can go even higher than this wonder.

A gradual rise in excellence like what we see here with Black Sky Giant cannot be ignored. How in the hell has this band not been signed to a label with a regular schedule contract? Why isn’t this band more widespread? How – just how?! – is the name of Black Sky Giant not a name that causes waves in the sprawling pool of the heavy community with every new release? Should there be a single release up to this point from them that proves the utter wonder of Black Sky Giant from here on out, how could there be anything more compelling than what “End of Days Pilgrimage” has to offer?
