The very landscapes of doom, heavy psych, and psychedelia in general have been more entwined than ever before with the current climate of each style constantly overlapping in one release to the next to really bring to life experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in the realms of heaviness or psychedelics. Never before has there been a more entertaining time for fans of any of the styles with fans of all having a particularly thrilling time, and few bands have been able to capitalize on it as well as Obsidian Sea. Sadly, they’re not what many would consider at the top of what the sound has to offer but they’ve been a force to know since their very beginnings, and it’s with their latest piece of excellence that such a trend is only furthered beautifully.
For what’s been years now, one of the peaks for me throughout all of rock music remains as Greenleaf’s 2016 album, “Rise Above the Meadow”, for all that it achieves without failure, and there simply hasn’t been many bands whatsoever that have been able to transport me back to that mindset of awestruck wonder that keeps me planted in my seat without question with the only thought being to keep the music in question flowing eternally. Since that fateful day, no rock band has been able to deliver me back to that point better than how Obsidian Sea has managed to do so with their brand new opus, “Pathos”. Seven tracks that make up what’s certifiably the band’s most accomplished work to date without a shred of doubt or incompetency in sight whatsoever, I still find it hard to come up with the words to describe them after taking what’s been the entire morning listening to the same forty minutes on constant repeat. A damn near-perfect concoction of riffs, psychedelia, and a classic brand of smoothness that graces the entire album are all brought together to quickly enable “Pathos” to rise as the band’s certifiably boldest creation to date while certifiably being the best effort of its kind that 2022 has produced thus far and I would be absolutely stunned to see it topped quickly for all that Obsidian Sea has managed to deliver in every given moment of the effort.
From the quietest moments of ethereal wonder to ripping solos, “Pathos” has all that you could ask for and maybe even a little bit more with the very name of Obsidian Sea rising even higher into the scene just as it rightfully deserves. I already have a feeling that I’ll be talking about this record to you all yet again come next January, and I can only hope that the wonders of “Pathos” will be doing the rounds up to and well after that point.
