A debut that manages to catch the eye and ear is always a treat worth talking about. One that manages to impress from virtually every angle, however, demands to be talked about until the release of a follow-up. The sprawling underground is always flooded with many bands that are able to dish out plenty of worthwhile debuts, and it can be all but effortless to find yourself drowning as you try to experience what you can. In my most recent dip, it was when I resurfaced that I found myself bursting forth from the utter chaos that Trenchant brought forth with their very own debut with it certainly being one that has much more to offer than a few simple riffs and the desire to sound big.

It’s not terribly often that we get a creation that feels pure in its vision with the new band in question managing to achieve it virtually without fail, and it truly does vary from one band to the next just how grandiose that vision is with some tending to lean towards a more straight-forward approach that can somehow feel just as effective as some wildly complex creation. There’s nothing incredibly fancy going on within the fiery confines of “Commandoccult” with Trenchant certainly knowing the sound they want to go for with the talent to back it all the way up, and yet it packs just as much a punch as some viciously layered creation that touches the soul and eviscerates any who stand in its way. This is a pure vision of unrelenting martial death metal that is ferociously efficient right from the very beginning as “Commandoccult” not only delivers a scathing performance that checks off all the right boxes for such a display of power, but they manage to add just enough flavor and occasional atmosphere into the mix to really make their debut album an even that demands to be heard by anyone who finds themselves in the throes of modern death metal in all of its glory. A real vision of what it means to make an effective but still relatively simple effort of death metal that makes for an entertaining offensive, to experience what Trenchant has crafted here is the bear witness to the very start of what’s sure to be an enthralling career of death metal excellency the likes of which “Commandoccult” lays the foundation for wondrously.

The very fact that this is just the debut from Trenchant makes me very excited, for if this is what they can craft for their first effort then what can happen when they further temper their sound and allow it to grow even more as it becomes a true force to be reckoned with from virtually every angle? The simple existence of “Commandoccult” is enough to get my adrenaline pumping for all that it can accomplish at the drop of a hat, and it won’t be any time soon that the album will be lost from my listening habits for all that it brings to the table in splendid fashion.
