Krvl – Kravaal

Of the prevailing issues that have plagued many debuts for several years now one of the worst certifiably has to be the band in question sounding all but flat in their vision despite passion often being a driving force for the creations in hand. Too often can a band performing any specific sound come across at the very antithesis of dynamic with a performance almost effortlessly coming across as one-dimensional for one reason or another, but to witness a band overcome such a challenge is to likely witness the birthing of something that’s more than noteworthy. With their own debut, Krvl has done a true bang-up job at their slab of black metal proves to be all it needs to be and, somehow, just a little bit more.

A pure work of black metal is something that many of us can still find real wonder in no matter who is putting it forth, and any straight-forward debut of the sound can still be outright enthralling should the right minds and hands have a part to play in its crafting. In the case of Krvl, I would defy anyone to look into the dark halls of what’s been made to bring “Kravaal” to life and find yourself bored with what’s been laid forth. The overwhelming majority of the record is steeped in that scathing style with real riffs and haunting atmospheres to be had around many different corners of the album, yet the album doesn’t stop at being purely a creation of black metal. Dipping their toes into the realms of doom and post-metal-oriented regions of black metal, it’s impressive to experience all that “Kravaal” has to offer for it’s a deliciously multi-dimensional creation that has more than its fair share of twists, turns, and surprises that keeps the listener more than interested for the very whole of the album’s runtime. All of that makes the record fascinating to immerse yourself in as Krvl adeptly avoids the tragic fate of simply being boring whether they come at us with classic riff patterns, thick atmospheres that are all but overwhelming, invigorating in its power, and downright satisfying in its culmination as “Kravaal” quickly proves itself as a work that has much more than one might initially assume.

It could be said for several works out there that black metal fans from all over should experience the work in question even if the album isn’t really something to ride home about, but it is every ounce of what Krvl has brought to the table for their impactful debut that I cannot help but wholly recommend in every form. All the way to its fittingly abrupt end, “Kravaal” makes for a vicious effort of black metal that spares no one and leaves nothing but desolation in its wake, making the future for Krvl all but immensely promising!
