When you get into the urban wilderness and find yourself amidst the concrete walls and towering works of metal, it can be all but effortless to feel apart. Apart from the natural world and all of its wonders that it has for us to experience as we please as the feeling of disconnection is all but inevitable with nature feeling like a fantasy a whole other world away. Yet, just because it’s not right in front of your eyes doesn’t mean that its beauty has left this world, but that’s a hurdle that many of us find difficult to overcome for many reasons. In just five tracks, it’s with their debut EP that The Flower of Love manages to deliver a natural yet potent performance that cures such woes while still providing a wonderful listen.
Normally, I don’t think many of us would expect a release as poignant in its connections to the natural realm to come out of this particular corner of rock music. With a punk visage with plenty of post elements that permeate the very whole of the performance, it’s with their very first offering that the long-gifted duo of The Flower of Love shows us what it likes to return to your roots and make music for the liberation of the self. It could be hard to look into what’s brought forth within the five tracks of “Pan’s Not Dead” and come to such a conclusion, but the very title of the record offers us a glimpse into the mindset of The Flower of Love and how that alone makes this EP such a potent creation that has much more than many of us might expect. Deriving themes from Plutarch’s “Moralia”, just because the times change or something undergoes evolution doesn’t mean that the old is done away with to be lost in the oceans of a forgotten time. Rather, it’s through a laidback yet passionate performance driven by smooth, evocative vocals and well-honed skills with these instruments that The Flower of Love transitions those themes for our modern world with the very themes of nature to be found everywhere we go even if we find ourselves drowning in the urban jungles or somehow cut off from our worldly origins.
“Pan’s Not Dead” could tragically be dismissed almost effortlessly as a creation of subdued post-punk made by well-established musicians simply wanting to create something for themselves, but it’s not hard to find upon closer inspection that this debut has far more many layers than just that no matter how true it might be. It’s the type of record that should resonate with anyone who finds themselves listening to it for it’s far more than a performance, but, rather, one that’s passionate, fun, and engaging all in the span of just over fourteen minutes.
