Dungeon Weed – The Eye of the Icosahedron

Out of the vast realms of all that doom metal has come to encompass since its very earliest days, it’s always a real treat to witness any band rise out of nothingness to attain a status that many cannot consider anything less than utterly essential. Normally, it would take years for any band to earn such a label since excellence of that caliber rarely ever appears to us in an instant. When I first stumbled upon Dungeon Weed last year with their striking debut, I knew what I heard was good but I wasn’t ready for how open-armed the scene as a whole was for that performance. Not only a year later, Dungeon Weed returns to us with a tremendous effort met with even more praise than before with it all being more than warranted for what’s been brought forth for this massive double album.

Immediately, if the very concept of a band with a self-described sound of “psychedelic wizard doom” doesn’t catch your interest without even so much as a second thought then I suggest you go back to wherever it is you crawled forth from for that has to be one of the most fascinating and craziest three words put together that I’ve heard in years for anything doom. Having only just heard Dungeon Weed’s debut before tonight, I would’ve said that’s a very accurate description however brief it may be, but it is every given facet of all that’s brought to the table for “The Eye of the Icosahedron” that we see this quartet instantly raise the bar barely over a half-year since they first made impact in the underground. A sprawling creation of 16 tracks spread across a staggering 76-minute runtime, there isn’t a riff, shroom, or dungeon for the very whole of this release that doesn’t come together almost too well in order to really prove to us why Dungeon Weed is a name that needs to be respected without so much as a second thought. To defy the psychedelic heaviness that finds itself steeped in the classic influences while still pushing forward to become an entity all on its own with the talent, craziness, and vicious tenacity to match would be to spit in the very face of what fans all across the world are constantly clamoring for with the very essence of “The Eye of the Icosahedron” so much more than what we could’ve asked for. Nothing is held back for this massive undertaking of an album with the fruits of Dungeon Weed’s labors apparent in every given moment of its monolithic runtime.

The world of doom will never be lacking when it comes to bands or talent that manage to keep us guessing or simply delivering the goods in some form or another, but that doesn’t make the arrival of bands like Dungeon Weed any less bewildering for all that they’re able to do so soon after their arrival. It’s clear upon listening to any given minute of “The Eye of the Icosahedron” that this conclusion is a true work of dedication, love, and passion from this band the likes of which we only rarely ever get to see with all that’s delivered in this record promising even greater heights from Dungeon Weed should we simply be patient enough for it to be born into reality.
