Mortuus Cadaver – Cemetery Debauchery

There’s always an argument to be made as to just how strong of a presence the old school has in any given style of music as it’s each new generation that finds the style in a state, pushes it forward, and oftentimes leaves many elements of the past behind them without a second thought. With the worlds of metal and rock, though, I truly do not believe that the old school will ever truly die for the reverence that those classic threads still have in peoples’ hearts all across the world with the underground realms, in particular, really showing us just how compelling the old school can be. With their new debut album, Mortuus Cadaver’s effort is but one in an ocean of others but it is still no less than massive and compelling.

It’s no contest anymore to say that the very fibers of the old school of death metal still play a massive role in what the style has churned out over the years with classic bands still hearkening back to those roots no matter how much they progress their own sound or new, fresh acts come out of the woodwork to show their love for it by perpetuating it. There has never been a shortage of bands throughout the very whole of the underground that manage to bring endless glory to death metal in its numerous forms with Mortuus Cadaver simply being one out of what has to be almost millions at this point that have managed to do so with all that’s brought forth in the seven tracks of “Cemetery Debauchery” a simple but viciously effective work of just such reverence. A surprisingly competent debut from all angles, it’s the very soul of “Cemetery Debauchery” that cannot be denied as it’s right from the very beginning that the old school has an enormous role to play in this creation but never once does it hold back the talent that Mortuus Cadaver doesn’t hide for even a second as they manage to show us what they’re made of rather than what they’re influences are; a band that’s devoted to the sound for all that it’s accomplished but one that still manages to add their own voice to the collective of the underground.

Brought all together, it all allows Mortuus Cadaver to hit that immensely sweet and savory middle ground for death metal that calls to the past without letting it restrict the very personality from the band with every aspect from the delicious and diverse pacing, the wildly engaging Nunslaughter cover, immaculate production for such a creation, and so much more enabling “Cemetery Debauchery” to both meet its quota for the style and so much more without doing anything fancy, flashy, or try-hard. This is what it means to have reverence without blindly following to the grave, and Mortuus Cadaver pulled it off with immense flavor and talent to make their debut a true spectacle for fans everywhere.
