The very glory of HM-2 death metal is the sort of thing that has become so embedded into what much of modern death metal is has become something of a standard for what many of us have come to expect from many different corners of the underground depending on where we’re looking. It’s especially from places like Sweden where we typically expect to find HM-2 driven metal in high quantity, but, naturally, that’s far from the only place to find it done competently. Many wouldn’t think to look for it within the small but promising scene that comes out of Malaysia but like many of the scenes spread throughout Asia, it’s a scene that’s not to be underestimated for it can bring forth some truly substantial surprises with Reputdeath being one that constantly delivers the same glory we’re talking about here.

Far from a new or inexperienced band at this point, Reputdeath’s reputation in the Malaysian scene should be all but absolutely cemented at this rate given their activity since the band’s first release ten years ago. With a release occurring every year since 2015 with the vast majority of them being demos, it’s at this point that I truly believe Reputdeath could never put forth a “proper” EP or full-length album and compromise on their quality for even though these are demos it is every other facet of these performances that show aptitude and power the likes of which cannot be denied no matter how much time it was put in a studio or lack thereof. That continues to be the case with the band’s latest demo, “Dissecting Goryfication”, for it has got to be the band’s most accomplished work to date. This is the exact kind of death metal that hearkens back to the old school in absolutely immaculate detail that revels in how unrefined it is in its purest form with the ending of the album making the listener feels unclean in the most glorious way with the riffs, power, and tremendous diversity in pacing really breathing life into this creation. It’s such that with just four tracks Reputdeath manages to accomplish so much more with “Dissecting Goryfication” than what many have been able to bring forth in a fully realized full-length album, really embodying how simple but to the point this band is down to its very core. There’s no room for fucking around nor is there any time to prepare the listener for the onslaught. There is only the attack and only blood to be shed when “Dissecting Goryfication” is playing.

As one of the more criminally underrated scenes out of Asia, to see a band like this bring undeniable glory to the name of Malaysian metal brings a chill down my spine for you could transplant this sound and band to anywhere else in the more recognized world of metal and everyone would say it’s a perfectly normal instance. But, it’s because of their location that Reputdeath manages to rise above much of their contemporaries with undeniable power and compelling energy that permeates the very whole of “Dissecting Goryfication” without exception. This is a demo that’s not to be underestimated nor is Reputdeath to be considered anything other than one of the key faces in the Malaysian underground with few being able to even touch their unyielding power.
