Far too often is it that the world of hardcore is given a hard time, in my opinion. I will never quite understand it since the style has always existed in this off middle-ground between rock and metal where it doesn’t fall neatly into either one with it feeling like every other band manages to bring something even just a little different to the table to varying degrees of effectiveness, and it’s all too common to see a worthwhile band of that kind go unheralded simply because the style isn’t as widespread as it probably should be. When Hoy Es Siempre Todavía released their debut album just last year, it wouldn’t have been hard to imagine that it would be some time before we heard from the band again after they injected some real life into the sound. Yet, it was even after that release that the band had more to throw our way as we waited for the next great helping of hardcore that they would expertly craft for us, and it’s this treat of an EP that is just as flavorful albeit fleeting.
When I had first come upon Hoy Es Siempre Todavía last year by pure happenstance, I honestly wasn’t expecting much since it was but the band’s debut album at that point with the only allure of the album to me at that point being purely the cover art, so I wasn’t exactly exuding cofidence for the album. After hearing what was within, however, I was very interested to see what else Hoy Es Siempre Todavía was capable of given the quality, power, and emotion that played significant and well-crafted roles for the whole of that effort, and it’s now with just four tracks that the Spanish quartet showing us just another hint of what more they’re able to bring forth. Standing as a piece that could be discerned as little more than a brief collection of B-sides from last year’s “Satori”, it’s the 15-minute runtime of “Amapolas” that manages to become much more than that what all that’s put forth in what little time it has to offer. Rather than a simple group of tracks that didn’t quite make the cut for a larger performance, it’s the very whole of “Amapolas” that effortlessly stands on its own virtually without struggle as we’re given a tremendous peek behind the curtains of what Hoy Es Siempre Todavía is capable of delivering even in such fleeting circumstances.
It’s a true task to accomplish anything within 15 minutes no matter what the band in question is, but it’s with that contained within four tracks that show us even more of the passion, emotion, and power that are the clear driving forces for Hoy Es Siempre Todavía and why they have to be considered a name that has to be watched when looking at the up-and-coming sections of what hardcore has to offer. To simply pass “Amapolas” by for not being anything more than a brief sideshow for B-sides would be to spit upon the talent at play here and all that Hoy Es Siempre Todavía is clearly capable of.
